DIY Balloon-Flower Display
I have not written a blog post in a long time. I find it more challenging to put things into words than into pictures but I will keep on practicing, so here goes.
This is a simple way of making your balloons stay upright, looking like flowers to put on display at a party or an event, when you don't want to get them filled with helium or just feel like something more creative and want repurpose those egg boxes! I made a little video which gives the basic steps but I thought I should give a few more details here.
Step 1 - CUT BLOCKS
Take an egg box and cut it up in the little square blocks with a box cutter. Make the edges neat with a pair of scissors.
Step 2 - PAINT BLOCKS
Paint each side according to the color of your decor and balloons, letting each side dry before doing the other side.
Step 3 - MAKE HOLES
Decide what you want to use to keep the balloons upright. I used wooden skewers that I had in my drawer. It is important to decide this as you have to make the holes at the bottom of the egg box to be the same size as the skewer (or what else you want to use). I used the sharp edge of the skewer to make the hole and this way ensured that the hole is exactly the right size.
Step 4 - CUTEX
If you are using the wooden skewers, check if there are any sharp edges on the flat end of the skewer as this can punch a hole into the balloon. You can sand it down with sandpaper and paint on some clear cutex to make the edge smoother.
Step 5 - TIE A STRING
Now blow up your balloons and tie a knot. Use the one end of a string and tie it around the balloon's knot. I used a plain nylon string as I did not want it to be visible. The length of the string must be about 8 - 10cm (20 - 25 inches).
Step 6 - PUT IT ALL TOGETHER
Now take the long end of the string, push it through the hole of the egg box and tie a knot. Hold the string in place so that it doesn't slip back through the hole (the hole will be bigger than the string) and push the smooth end of the skewer through the hole from the bottom towards the balloon.
Step 7 - TIDY LOOSE ENDS
Now you should be able to hold up the balloon with the skewer (like a really big lollipop). Make sure to cut off any long pieces of string that are still visible.
To take your craftiness even further, decorate some recycled glass bottles and put your balloons in it like a flower arrangement! If your balloon-flower arrangements will be standing outdoors, make sure to fill the jar with pretty pebbles to give it more weight so it doesn't get blown over.
